Jake grew up staring at the old Fender Jazz Bass sitting in his parent's basement. He began playing the saxophone in grade school, but it was not until he was asked to join the school's jazz band that he finally picked up the old guitar and began to play. Jake quickly displayed talent and genuine pleasure for music and the instrument itself.

In addition to playing in jazz bands at the high school and collegiate level, he diversified his musical tastes by investing interest in such groups as The Beatles, Dispatch, Incubus, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, and Aerosmith. At this time he began playing in various rock 'n roll influenced bands until he joined The Mason Dixons in early 2007, where Jake was quickly introduced to an overabundance of some of his current  favorite bands, including: Cross Canadian Ragweed, Reckless Kelly, Wade Bowen, The Randy Rogers Band, and Ray Scott.
